William T. Bacon Sensory Garden
Inside the Chicago Botanic Garden in Chicago, Illinois, visually impaired visitors will find the William T. Bacon Sensory Garden. With 200 plants selected for their textures and scents, the garden has raised beds, a walk along a lagoon, a path under a canopy of trees, and an open air arbor set in a fragrant pine grove filled with calling birds. Visitors wear special radios around their necks that pick up signals laid under the path to hear about the various plants and flowers. The garden is designed with curbs to mark the path and a ramp for wheelchair access, and passes over wooden walkways.
